WRITE UP FOR TAIWAN MARKET
The SSI-Schaefer group was incorporated in Germany in 1938, and now has offices and representation in 55 countries, over 4 continents.
In 2006, MMH – the USA magazine stated that SSI-Schaefer was the World’s No. 1 supplier of Industrial Storage and Automation Systems with a turnover of almost US$2billion. How does a family own company still in its second generation of management achieve such results?
Sound management during the growth years of the 1960/ 1970s, supplying innovative storage solutions for the German economy which was becoming the driving force of Europe was the back bone of the Company’s success.
Management placed a high emphasis on quality, value for money and most importantly, the ability to complete and handover projects within agreed timelines.
Research and Development was also a keystone to the Company’s success, continually seeking methods to improve existing systems, with the emphasis to provide volumetrically efficiency storage solutions. Schaefer was quick to appreciate that storage of finished products alone was a cost to the manufacturer, with little apparent value added benefit. But if the systems could ensure stock protection, product rotation, economic use of the warehouse footprint, then the investment could be justified.
It is no accident or coincidence that most photographs of Schaefer installations show high rise racking, shelving or multi-tier systems, using the simple philosophy that land costs money, air is free. Schaefer developed a range of storage systems which provide high density, excellent volumetric utilization with optimum use of the warehouse footprint.
In the 1970s and 1980s, Schaefer pioneered high rise automated pallets/ bin storage systems designed as either a rack clad structures or indoor within an existing warehouse.
It was no surprise that in year 2000, Schaefer took over Noell from the Preussag Group and integrated it in to the Schaefer Organization, providing the Company with the ability to undertake turnkey projects supplying fully automated warehouses, including project management, supply of retrieval systems, in/ out bound conveyors with Logic control and WMS IT.
The acquisition of PEEM Austria in year 2001 gave the group automated piece picking systems, case conveyors and pick to light technology, thus making the Schaefer Company one of the few companies world wide who could undertake major turnkey products utilizing all systems available in-house.
Along side Germany’s development of this comprehensive product range, Schaefer under the guidance of CEO (Overseas Operations) - Mr. Rudolf Keller, the Company expanded its presence from its strong Germanic base in Germany/ Austria and Switzerland to encompass the whole of Europe, North, Central and South America and Asia Pacific.
APAC/ Middle East represents Schaefer’s largest growth potential, the Singapore office incorporated in 1984 now controls 11 offices in 10 countries with 2 manufacturing plants in Malaysia and China, consolidated sales in 2007 will exceed US$140million, the region has become the Company’s single largest growth market.
The reason for this success is the adoption of an Asian philosophy:
� Establishment of Schaefer offices with trained staff throughout the region to provide customers with innovative, cost effective solutions.
� Local manufacturing of key components in Malaysia/ China
� Adoption of International Design and Safety standards i.e. FEM codes of practice
� Quality products produced at competitive prices
� Local service and support
� The permanent establishment of Schaefer throughout Asia to provide continued long term support with continuity of supply
� The ability to supply a comprehensive range of products from traditional solutions to semi and fully automated systems.
Schaefer have now invested over US$30million to establish a sales and manufacturing infrastructure with Regional Product Support Managers, with the Company having the local personnel to consult design and install its complete range of product.
This commitment reflects the traditions of Mr. Schafer of building strong foundations wherever the company incorporates its offices.
Research and Development of Automated and Semi Automated Systems continues a new concept called Schaefer Carousel System – SCS was introduced 3 years ago to meet one particular client’s demand for high speed case and piece picking. This system now forms part of the Company’s portfolio of solutions.
A new automated case picking solution is currently in development and will be introduced on the company’s 2,000m2 exhibition stand at Cemat 2008 to be held in Hanover, 27th to 31st May.
Visitors to this stand and exhibition will quickly understand why Schaefer are now the World’s No. 1!
