Characteristics
Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) is waste which originates in the domestic and business activities of cities and towns. The composition of this urban waste varies greatly depending on the location, the climate and the degree of industrialisation of each country. In any case, it is normally formed by a combination of heterogeneous materials of which approximately half are constituted by non-fermentable (inorganic) materials, most of which are recyclable. The rest of the materials are organic waste, which must also be recovered for stabilisation, production of compost or of energy-recoverable biogas

The aim of all urban waste facilities is to recover the greatest quantity of recyclable materials, treat the organic fraction and reduce the rejection quantity sent to the rubbish dump. The so-called MBTs are plants devoted to comprehensive treatment of urban waste, which includes mechanical and biological treatments for its recovery.
